This week, the Niagara County Legislature declared September 2026 as “Underground Railroad Month.” The proclamation states that, “Niagara County holds a significant place in Underground Railroad history, with Niagara Falls serving as an important getaway for freedom seekers traveling north toward Canada and freedom.” This proclamation is another step forward to ensure that the struggle by Black abolitionists for their rights will be remembered, and that the enduring values of freedom, equality, courage, and human dignity will be taught to future generations.

September honors two of our nations most important advocates for freedom, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, who operated significantly in Niagara County. Tubman crossed through Niagara County on at least eight journeys bringing freedom seekers north to Canada. Douglass often spoke here for abolitionist causes, as well as assisted people to Canada through Niagara County. Both Tubman and Douglass liberated themselves during the month of September.

Niagara County Legislature, “encourages all residents to learn about, honor, and preserve the history and legacy of the Underground Railroad and the courageous individuals who sought and helped others achieve freedom.” Projects such as the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Byway, administered by the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, will help bring statewide and national attention to the important role that Niagara County played in the Underground Railroad. Phase one of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway of NYS was passed into law on June 19th, 2026, with phase two coming shortly.

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center thanks Niagara County for their commitment to preserving this important history.
